When it comes to Old Hollywood stars, Betty Grable was "the girl with the million-dollar legs." She also lived in a million-dollar home just four blocks from the Hotel Bel-Air. Located at 1280 Stone Canyon Road in Los Angeles, the house is currently on the market for $13.295 million.
"It's a classic Hollywood estate," said listing agent Bjorn Farrugia of Hilton & Hyland. "It's very picturesque -- set back on one of the best streets in Bel-Air." Grable moved in after the home was built in 1937, the same year she married actor Jackie Coogan (aka "The Kid" in the Charlie Chaplin movie of the same name, and "Uncle Fester" in the 1960s sitcom "The Addams Family"). Soon after, in 1939, the couple appeared in "Million Dollar Legs," a movie giving rise to the actress' nickname.
Grable quickly became an acting, singing and dancing triple threat. Between 1943 and 1951, she was the highest-paid Hollywood celebrity, according to Time magazine. She was also the No. 1 pinup girl of World War II, after posing in a bathing suit.
"Betty Grable became the stuff of Hollywood legend after her studio reportedly insured her famously gorgeous legs for $1 million with Lloyd's of London -- the same legs that were captured in one of the most iconic photographic images of the 20th century," a biography by Turner Classic Movies explains.
After Grable moved out in the late '40s, the home went on to be owned by a couple of celebrities, including Jaclyn Smith from "Charlie's Angels" and Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills & Nash.
The seller is an L.A. entertainment lawyer, Schuyler Moore, according to property records. After being on the market for only two weeks, the home is already generating interest among buyers.
"One guy is very interested in it," explained Farrugia. "He's of the pedigree of the people that have lived in the house -- a very famous guy."
While he can't disclose names until the deal closes, Farrugia expects to sell the place soon.
"It's a well-maintained home," he said. "The kitchen has been remodeled at least once and everything has been updated above-average."
The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home shows off great taste and craftsmanship, beautifully mixing architectural elements like hardwood floors and wood paneling with updated appliances and finishes. Of note, the master suite features an elegant fireplace sitting area, a giant bathtub and a balcony overlooking manicured gardens and a glowing swimming pool.
The home also has what Moore calls "a full-blown man cave" where he currently displays his motorcycle, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Among Bel-Air homes, the estate is five times more expensive than the median home value. The estimated mortgage payment is $51,153, assuming 20 percent down on a 30-year fixed mortgage.
